Challenges of co-determination in the double transformation

The fifth and last event evening (before the final event) of our lecture series "Work and Democracy" took place on Tuesday evening, 11 June. This time, we welcomed colleagues from the Institute for Labour and Qualification at the University of Duisburg Essen to the O-Werk. They spoke about the challenges of the multi-layered levels of co-determination in the dual transformation of the economy and labour as well as the prospects for a sustainable labour policy. The evening was moderated by our research assistant Sabrina Glanz and was attended by around 40 people (with a balanced distribution of online and face-to-face participants).

We were also particularly pleased to welcome the works council members from the certificate programme "Digital Transformation. Co-determination. Co-create". Based on various empirical research projects, the lecture offered insights into the largely unregulated area of digital work in the platform economy, interest representation in changing corporate structures and the scope for action in labour policy against the backdrop of the socio-ecological transformation.

Dr Sophie Rosenbohm (Department of Working Time and Work Organisation at the IAQ, DUE) explained the increasing importance of general and group works council committees and described articulation as a central requirement for action for interest representation in the multi-level system. The last event evening "Democracy is slow, AI is fast: Challenges in the digital transformation" on 25 June will begin with a lecture by Prof. Dr. Manfred Wannöffel (Managing Director of the Joint Employment Centre RUB/IGM), Dr. Claudia Niewerth (Managing Director of the Helex Institute/Joint Employment Centre RUB/IGM) and Dirk Stüter (Chairman of the Works Council at Doncasters) and will discuss the relationship between work, technology and labour policy.
