Works councils in German companies - from the Weimar Republic to the present day

2024-09-09

New publication "Betriebsräte in deutschen Unternehmen - von der Weimarer Republik bis heute (Sozialgeschichte in Bewegung)".

The book "Betriebsräte in deutschen Unternehmen - von der Weimarer Republik bis heute (Sozialgeschichte in Bewegung)" was published on 9 September, edited by Stefan Berger and Andrea Hohmeyer.

The German culture of co-determination is an integral part of an understanding of social democracy as a supplement to the political democracy of the Federal Republic of Germany. In this volume, it is analysed in its various facets from its beginnings in the years of the Weimar Republic to the present day. It becomes clear how co-determined companies were and are not only economically more efficient, but also promise the democratic participation of their employees. As laboratories of democracy, they are the basis of an 'embedded capitalism' in the sense of Karl Polanyi, which not only asks for 'stakeholder value', but is also committed to social justice. The contributions collected here illustrate how central co-determination was for the democratic self-image of the Federal Republic of Germany and how models of future co-determination can produce more democracy in the future.
