(No) work?! Labour policy challenges of content creation

2024-09-11

19 September 2024, 9.30 - 10.15 a.m.

Social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and TikTok are changing media consumption forever. Almost 70% of under-30s use these platforms daily for entertainment and information (ARD/ZDF online study). The platforms themselves do not create content, but utilise content created by users - often by solo content creators. Being a YouTuber or influencer is considered a "dream job" among young people. These activities take place in the (still) largely unregulated labour market of the creator economy and are somewhere between a hobby and self-employment. The session will discuss good work and the need for regulation with those involved in this new world of work.

Fabian Hoose, research associate at the Centre of Cooperation RUB/IGM, is organising a session at LABOR.A® DIGITAL 2024 together with colleagues from the Institute for Labour and Qualification (IAQ).
